Not only generating, but also storing: Borg Energy Storage in action at the Connectr Demofield

31 Mar 2026

At the Connectr Demofield in Arnhem, Borg Energy Storage has recently been installed. An underground heat buffer that builds on earlier development and is now fully designed with a focus on simplicity, reliability, and applicability in practice.

From generation to smart use

Borg Energy Storage is designed to decouple energy generation and consumption. At times when a lot of electricity is available, for example through solar generation or favourable market prices, a heat pump converts that electricity into heat. This heat is stored in a well-insulated underground buffer. When heat demand increases later, this energy can be used for space heating or domestic hot water.

In this way, energy is not only generated sustainably, but also used strategically.

“We are used to using energy immediately. With Borg, you can store energy and use it when it makes sense. This makes a home less dependent on peaks in the grid and gives more control over its own energy use.” — Joost, founder of Borg Energy Storage

Why at the Connectr Demofield?

That Borg Energy Storage is located at the Connectr Demofield is no coincidence. Here, innovations are given the space to prove themselves outside the lab, in the middle of real-world conditions. The installation is tested and monitored here to gain insight into performance, reliability, and the role that thermal storage can play in a more flexible energy system.

Designed for practice

Simplicity and applicability have also been key in the execution. Borg connects directly to existing heating systems and operates at the same pressure as the system in the home. Above ground, the impact remains limited: with an underground footprint of approximately 2 by 2 metres, the buffer can be placed compactly, comparable to the way underground containers are installed.

The next step

The coming period will focus on measuring, learning, and improving. Not in theory, but in practice. And that is exactly the core of this step: Borg Energy Storage shows at the Connectr Demofield that smart thermal energy storage is no longer a future concept, but is ready for the next phase.

Would you like to see it yourself? During the Arnhem Electricity Week Demodays, Borg Energy Storage can be viewed live at the test strip of Cleantech Park Arnhem. Come by, ask your questions, and meet the people behind the technology.
